Second shooting is an awesome opportunity

to gain experience and learn from another photographer especially if you are new to the wedding photography industry! Even for experienced wedding photographers, second shooting is a great opportunity to get creative.

I've had the pleasure of second shooting three weddings this year and here's 10 things you should do as a second shooter that your lead photographer will thank you for:

  1. Ask what the lead photographer needs from you. What are they wanting you to capture that day? It may be the details, the groomsmen, or the venue. Make sure you communicate well with your lead photographer.
  2. Stay out of the background of the lead photographer's photos. Communication and awareness is key!
  3. You are not there to promote your own business, you are working for the lead photographer and so you are an extension of their business. They've done all the hard work and prep leading up to the day. If someone asks you about your own business you can say something like: "Yes, I do own my own photography business - Madison Fernandez Photography - however, I am here working for (Lead Photographer's Name).
  4. Make sure if the lead photographer is using flash in a certain setting that you are also using flash. You want the final images to be consistent in all lighting situations.
  5. If you get to keep a copy of the images to edit for your own portfolio, do not share the images before the lead photographer has delivered their final gallery and shared their own photos.
  6. Always always remember to tag the lead photographer and mention that you second shot for them that day!
  7. Take behind the scenes footage for your lead photographer. I promise she will appreciate this so much!!
  8. Get different angles, get creative!

The images below were taken while I was second shooting for Kelly O'Connor Photography who is based out of Austin, TX. She's amazing! If you're in the Austin area make sure to reach out :)
