One of the first things

you'll do when you book your session is choose a location! But how do you choose the perfect spot for your next family or engagement session? Most of the time (if you don't already have a specific location in mind) you can ask your photographer! Your photographer will have a list of locations they've shot at or locations they are wanting to shoot at and from there you can look online and choose the location you like most! Or tell your photographer the 'vibe' you are going for and he/she will pick the perfect spot for you! Read below to learn what I look for perfect in locations :)

So what makes a perfect location?

Whenever I'm scouting a new location there are two main things I'm looking for. First is... location lol. Shocker, I know! But, what I mean is I am looking for a unique location, somewhere quiet or off the beaten path, somewhere with a variety of shooting options (trees, stream, bridge, etc.). The second thing I look for is lighting!! This is most important. Is our location going to offer optimal lighting during 'golden hour'? If your session is booked for the morning or afternoon, does this location offer options like a tree or building that will provide shade?

Other things to think about (as the photographer)

  • Make sure you have options if something doesn't go to plan like other photographers in your spot.
  • Always get to your sessions early to do one last walk through to make a game plan.
  • If you don't have time to visit a location ahead of your session you can always look online! I love to utilize Google Maps or the app AllTrails if I just don't have the time to go before my scheduled shoot.
  • If your session is in the evening always look at what time the sun will set. Use your weather app or a sun tracking app to help you decide how to move through your session to use the lighting most effectively.
